What the hell is “location independence”?<\/h2>\n

People who travel and live in different places regardless of their work have come up with a term to denote their newfound freedom. They call themselves “location independent.” It’s fancy, it’s cute. It’s fucking ridiculous.<\/p>\n

If ever I enter a conversation, and after explaining “what I do”, which is another conversation altogether, and that person says with a nod of understanding, “ah yes, you’re location independent,” I might just slap them upside the head.<\/p>\n

I think it’s superficial to label ourselves with terms such as location independent. It’s like people are trying to find a category to fit into, or they need to place others in a category, because otherwise they feel lost. I suppose those who consider themselves location independent are also title dependent, and I don’t want to be included in their story.<\/p>\n

What’s wrong with location independence?<\/h2>\n

There’s nothing wrong with “location independence” except for its use as a term. It’s a scapegoat. People are lazy. Why go through the trouble of explaining that you live wherever you want? Oh no, you don’t need to waste your time with talk–no, instead you can just drop the term “location independent,” then you can feel your ego grow when your interlocutor looks dumbstruck–and why is he dumbstruck? Because you had to make yourself feel good that you have an unnecessary phrase to explain something so simple it hurts.<\/p>\n

Forget “Location Independence”!<\/h2>\n

You should explain yourself, and not depend on trivial terminology to get your point across. If you say “I’m location independent,” then you’re perpetuating a world of complication and blandness. If you say that you’re location independent to someone, then you’re a tool, simply put–so don’t do it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
