This post is a follow-up to the last post I wrote about applying for your Spanish NIE/TIE card. For those of you just joining this series of helpful articles, know that I’m writing them for anyone else who is thinking about studying in Spain and specifically, Barcelona.
After you apply for the NIE
You have already gone to the Police HQ near the metro stop Sant Marti in order to apply for the NIE/TIE. You had to have gone no later than one month after arriving in Spain. I don’t know what the penalty would be if you breached this time period, but I doubt it’d be very hefty.
When you finish the interview at the police HQ, they give you two documents. The first document is the Resguardo de Solicitud de NIE. It’s basically the bureaucratic receipt that says you’ve been processed and that you should go to pick up your NIE in 3-4 weeks. It include your information and also you NIE (the identification number). The second document is a tasa de pago, or accounts due. You must fill out your name, NIE (number ID that you cleave from the other document), address, and then sign and date. For payments of NIE/TIE processing, select the box that reads:
“TIE que documenta la autorizacion de estancia por estudios, intercambio de almnos, practicas no laborales o servicios de voluntariado (titular principal y sus familiares)”
In the bottom right corner you will see that the account due is 15.30 Euros.
Take both documents to the bank “La Caixa”, where they can accept payment, stamp the blue copy of the second document, and you’re on your way.
Where to pick up your NIE in Barcelona
On the first document, there’s an address printed. It will say “Carrer de Mallora 213”. Here’s a link to the national police. Here’s a map:
That’s all you need to know. Go to this address 3-4 weeks after the NIE interview, and they’ll have your NIE. There was no waiting, and no additional paperwork–they just handed me my NIE. Hope this will be helpful to you.
I’m currently studying in Barcelona on a long term visa and didn’t go to my nie appointment until after being here for almost three full months. And nobody said a word to me. I assume they probably just say that so people aren’t all sitting around undocumented for long periods.
